Picked up this Hand Surfa from John at revolversurf.blogspot.com .Cant wait to try it out. I hadnt found much info on them until I came across this fellow mat surfer, and what a sound chap he is too!

they are good fun matt, used to use one occasionally in Sydney. Also come in white, orange, green, blue and red. Always keep one with my mat quiver.
The earliest one that I know about was the "Dunlop Hand-Surfa" made in around 1964. The Formrite ones I reckon are more likely late 60's, if not early 70's.
Henry, were these very popular? Were they the first hand plane to be mass produced? Im going to have a go at making one.
Interesting that it's convex rather than concave. Reflective of surfboards of the time perhaps.

not sure how popular they were back in the day. In the 80's, 90's, 2000's cannot say I saw many people in Oz using hand-boards, but you would see somebody occasionally.
G, depends if you use it upside down.., the keel tends to get in the way though... lol)
